(Candles)
(Incense)
(Mala)

My altar – how do I use it?Typically, our altars have various objects, several of which can be found on most altars. One or more images or symbols that describe the orientation of the altar. Two candles.Incense.A Mala.A fire bowl or an Arathi vessel.

If I have a spiritual teacher, I approach him in the outside during his physical absence, as I approach my altar. My inner attitude adapts to that. I approach my altar as I approach my teacher. I take off my shoes, focus on my teacher with my heart, avoid extending my feet to him.

When I want to open up for the encounter, I light the candles as gates of light, through which I walk to meet my teacher. It does not matter if I light the candles with matches or a lighter. First I light the left candle, then the right candle. I am open to meeting my teacher and avoid contact with others in the room during this ritual, do not chatter, have my phone switched off.

I then light an incense stick on the left candle and bless my teacher with the burning incense stick. I surrender to myself as the incense surrenders to the fire. I do not expect anything but to be on the altar of my teacher as holy ashes. Should my teacher be physically in the room, I bless Him and not His image.

The Mala I use for mantra recitation, I count the mantras on the pearls of the Mala, to abide to a ninefold repetition. Nine as a symbol of the imperishable that does not change. Each number multiplied by nine remains in its checksum nine. I move the mala between thumb and forefinger, whereby the index finger symbolizes my ego and the thumb God. I bring my ego to God in this Mudra, where I place my index finger tip on the tip of my thumb.

I use a fire bowl or Arathi vessel as a fire sacrifice to purify my actions and place them in the service of my teacher. In the fire I recognize myself in Him and my soul as it rises in the smoke to him.

At the end of my altar session, I bow with folded hands to my teacher, Jai Guru Dev, victory to the Divine Teacher, and I close the gates of light by first extinguishing the left and then the right candle.

(Jay Guru Dev)When I clean the altar, I do the same in the same posture as in the altar. I use clean towels as I would use them to wash my teacher.Jay Guru Dev
